The 2017 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Shuler Hensley Awards nominations were announced March 28, with MPCS receiving 10 nominations for the recent production of “Beauty and the Beast,” plus an honorable mention for overall production. The Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards-Shuler Hensley Awards celebrate excellence in high school musical theater each year. This year 75 schools (both public and private) participated in the program. Only six out of the 75 participating schools receive nominations for each category.
Lynne Brague received her fourth consecutive nomination for choreography, and has won the category the past two years for her work on Peter Pan and Crazy For You. Recognized for a third consecutive year is Jenn Fitzpatrick for costuming. Fitzpatrick worked with a team of committed sewing moms and technical theater students to provide over 150 costumes for the elaborate production.
In the acting categories, Natalee Castro (sophomore) received a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress, and Emma Perry (junior) was nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Performer. MPCS also received nominations for Best Ensemble and Best Showstopper.
MPCS made a strong showing in the technical and design areas, receiving nominations in every tech and design category; the only school to do so. A Best Technical Execution nomination went to Abby Yake (senior). Catherine Pyle (senior) received a nomination for Best Lighting Design. David Morgan, MPCS Technical Director, received a nomination recognizing Best Scenic Design. Jered Schuerman received his third nomination in the category of Best Sound.
Part of the Shuler Awards features an ensemble comprised of performers from each of the participating schools. Representing MPCS this year will be seniors Cassady Stewart and Natalie Hammonds. These two will take part in many hours of rehearsal time with their peers as they prepare to perform with Mr. Shuler Hensley at the awards ceremony. Representing MPCS as part of the Shuler Awards tech crew will be Catherine Pyle.
The Ninth Annual Shuler Awards will be held Thursday, April 20, at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The red carpet festivities begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the awards show at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony will be broadcast live on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
