Tribute to the 2014 State Championship Football Team

It's the 10-year anniversary of sour varsity MPC football team bringing home the first football State title defeating ELCA in the Georgia Dome. In 2014, the varsity competition cheer team had also won their third straight State title — a legacy in which our current cheerleaders have carried on with a consecutive 12-time championship record.

On Homecoming, many of our 2014 players were present at the Alumni Dinner to be honored in remembrance of this major milestone in our athletics program.

About the Historic Team

The 2014 football team was the first Cobb County based school to win a football State Championship in 47 years. The last team to win a football championship title was the 1967 Marietta High School football team.

In just the seventh year of the Mount Paran Christian football program, head coach Mitch Jordan led his team to the first State Championship in program history. Finishing the season 14 - 0, the team averaged 44 points per game, only allowing an average of 12 points. After winning 10 straight regular season games, the team went on to beat Stratford Academy in the first round of the State tournament by a score of 45-14, and then defeated Savannah Christian in the second round with a score of 35-14. The semi-finals brought back a familiar opponent, Aquinas, whom the team lost to in the semifinals the year before. The team would not let history repeat itself and won the game 34-14.

On Saturday morning, December 13 at 10:00 a.m., the team faced Eagles Landing Christian in the Georgia Dome for the State championship match. Many Eagle families were in attendance and remember the excitement. In a definitive win, the team took home the trophy after winning with a score of 49-7. Nine players received All-State recognition – quarterback Jake Allen, defensive backs Graham and Reed Massey, place kicker Jake Mezei, linebacker Nick Sbravati, offensive linemen Carter Smith and Zach Strong, and running backs – Dorian Walker and Emoni Williams. Dorian Walker was the Offensive Player of the Year and Nick Sbravati was the Defensive Player of the Year.

Head Coach Mitch Jordan was named “Cobb County Coach of the Year” and received the “Bruce Cobleigh Coach of the Year” award in 2014. During his 14-year tenure, Coach Jordan had led the Eagles to two Region championships, four Elite 8 appearances, and one Final Four appearance, culminating with an A-Private GHSA State Championship in 2014. In his 14 years as head coach, he compiled an overall record of 101 wins and only 55 losses.

Thank you to the players and coaches who were in attendance. Click below to read the full story recently featured in the Marietta Daily Journal.
