MPC Golf and Track Get State Title Rings
- athletics
Congratulations to the 2024 boys varsity golf team for winning back-to-back State Championship titles. The players from the spring season team were presented with their State Champ rings at the football game in front of Eagle fans.
The golf team had a fantastic year winning several events, including the Darlington Invitational and the GSGA Kickoff Classic at Harbor Club. At the Area Tournament the team won the Area Championship shooting 6 under par with freshman B. Cale winning the tournament shooting a 4 under par 68.
At the GHSA State Tournament at Chimney Oaks Golf Club, the team faced some stiff competition and was behind after day one. Sam Binkley '24 erased the two-shot deficit on the first hole as he holed out from the fairway to get the Eagles rally started. Freshman L. Smith fired a 4 under 68 and Sam also finished at 4 under. Sophomore B. McQueen shot 7 under par 65 and freshman A. Hudson topped them all shooting an incredible 8 under par 64, and took home low medalist title as the individual boys State Champion. Their two-day total of 25 under par is unmatched in the GHSA record books.
Additionally, Shipley Smith '24 was awarded his individual track State title championship ring alongside the golf team. In the 3200m (2-mile) Shipley ran a 9:44.95 in the 3200m (2-mile) to win as the #1 long-distance track-and-field runner in the state for 2A. He is now attending Georgia College and State University and is running on their collegiate cross country team.
