Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to preschool, of course! It’s that time of year again when the MPCS preschool will be welcoming some tiny chicken friends to the cottage after spring break. In an unexpected turn of events, we ended up with two incubators with two hatching dates this year. You can watch the live action here:

Chicken Hatching Facts:

How long does it take for the eggs to develop from fertilization?
Once the eggs go in the incubator, it takes them 21 days to develop.

When do you expect that you’ll start to see the first eggs hatching?
We have two incubators this year, so there will be multiple hatching dates, but hatching should begin around April 14 or 15.

How many eggs do you have in the incubator?
We have 19 in one and 12 in the other. This year our eggs were donated by the grandparents of Pre-K4 student, Tristan Roberts.

What are the kids learning about the process? We teach them about the chicken life cycle. We also have a chart that shows what’s happening inside of the eggs each day. (They start to grow hearts on day 2!) We also learn that only God can do a miracle like turning an egg yolk into wings and beaks and feathers.

Here are a few kid responses to “What have you learned about chickens and eggs?”

  • They hatch with a little egg tooth. –-W. Madani
  • They’re wet when they hatch, but they dry fast. –-H. Banks
  • They’re so cute! –-P. Wiggins
  • The mama lays the eggs in a cozy nest. -–-H. Banks
  • The mama chicken keeps them warm. –-J. Pena
  • We put the incubator on 100 degrees to keep them warm like a mama. –-M. Patten
  • God made creation. And chickens. –-H. Banks

How do you name the chicks?
Each class picked 3-4 names. Then we have the MPCS community vote for their favorites.

Where do the chicks go after you are done with them?
In past years, they have gone to MPCS families who keep chickens. This year, they are going with Ms. Connie Perez for her adorable granddaughter, Olive (and family).
