On Thursday, April 1, the Eagle Robotics team was paid a special visit by an officer of the United States Space Force. Lt. Col. James E. Roberts is an academic year 2021 Student at the Air War College of the Air University located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The Air War College educates senior military and civilian teammates to serve as critical and strategic thinkers able to serve as national security senior leaders.
Eagle Robotics was privileged to hear about and explore the topic of the United States Space Force, its purpose, interactions, and role in protecting U.S. military and trade interests. The presentation was followed by a question and answer period, which went far beyond its allotted time. Lt. Col. Roberts remarked to teammates of the event, “As you may have surmised from our conversation, the questions you raised to me are the same dilemmas facing leaders in the space industry, our national leadership, and our partners around the globe. There is an on-going dialogue amongst and between these various parties as we work to establish norms of behavior (i.e. what is acceptable behavior and what is not) in our spacefaring activities. Every technical innovation or breakthrough brings with it a new set of hurdles to navigate. Our nation needs critical thinkers and problem solvers like you to continue working these tough issues into the future. I am inspired by your keen intellect, and I implore you to dedicate yourselves diligently to the pursuit of your educational excellence.”
Lt. Col. Roberts was a former high school student of Eagle Robotics Coach Brad Smith. After high school, Lt. Col. Roberts pursued an education at the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 2002. He is a career space operations officer with experience in intercontinental ballistic missile nuclear deterrent operations, Milstar satellite command and control operations, ground-based missile warning, missile defense, space surveillance operations, Headquarters Air Force staff, and joint force space component staff. Prior to his current position, Lt. Col. Roberts was the Commander, 6th Space Warning Squadron, Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass. Upon completion of his current Air War College training, he will accept an appointment at the Pentagon.
