Adding to her nomination as the 2006 Georgia Author of the Year for her chapbook If Not an Apple, MPCS high school English teacher Katie Fesuk Hartsock has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, one of the most respected literary awards in the country. Her poem, “To Other Parents in June, Our Children Like Kites or Birds Near the Sea,” first appeared in River Heron Review, the journal that nominated her work for the Pushcart. This poem, the first and namesake piece for her forthcoming collection Mamabird, examines both motherhood and art-making. This adds to Mrs. Hartsock’s long list of accolades, more than forty journals having published her poetry. Mamabird, her full-length manuscript to be released in January, is now available for pre-order. Mrs. Hartsock has earned degrees from UGA, Agnes Scott, KSU, and Reinhardt. We are thankful to have such a skilled teacher and talented writer on our staff. Congratulations, Mrs. Hartsock!
