Executive Council Spotlight: Tawanna Rusk

Executive Council Spotlight: Tawanna Rusk

The MPCS Executive Council is the key leadership team who helps make the day-to-day decisions in support of fulfilling the MPCS mission. We encourage you to learn more about each member as we feature the various departments weekly.

Title: Associate Head of School and Head of Upper School

Education: Bachelors of Science degree, Special Education, Georgia College; Masters degree, Educational Leadership, Kennesaw State University; Specialist degree, Educational Leadership, Kennesaw State University

Number of years in my profession: 32

Professional experience: I spent 20 years in public education as a special education teacher, lead teacher, and administrator, all at the middle school level. In my 12 years at MPCS, I have served as Head of Lower School, Head of Middle School, Head of High School, and Associate Head of School.

Fun fact: I love live music. A concert is my favorite thing to do in my free time. I love all types of music, and I am a lyric person. I want to know every word to the song and understand the story being communicated!

What I'm reading now or favorite book: I am reading mostly non-fiction right now and a great deal on leadership. My favorite fiction books of all time are Same Kind of Different as Me and Redeeming Love. I also love the memoir The Glass Castle.

Connections to MPCS: My daughter, Logan McKenzie, is from the class of 2012, and my son-in-law, Captain Matt McKenzie, is from the class of 2013. My daughter, Peyton Lewter, graduated with the class of 2015.

What I love most about MPCS: When I transitioned to MPCS from public school, I would explain that the quality of my life improved. I was free and encouraged to live my faith boldly while doing my work; it was no longer something to be hidden, but embraced. It is a privilege every day to share the love of Jesus with everyone I meet and to openly discuss and share how God is moving in our lives.

What I love about my role at the school: I have a deep affection for the school. As a mother of two graduates, I know that the teachers, coaches, administrators, and mentors my daughters had were instrumental in growing their love for the Lord. I think now, more than ever, we have a responsibility as Christ-followers to be the Paul to a young Timothy or an Elizabeth to a young Mary. Without question, my investment in our students is my greatest joy.

My hope for MPCS: In 30 years, it is my prayer that MPCS would remain steadfast and committed to our Christian mission, that in all things we would glorify God!
